When you receive a new set of nails, the temptation to customize their length or shape with a file can be strong. Many clients ask us, "Can I file my press-on nails to shorten them a bit?" or "Can I file the sides to make them fit better?"
The short answer is: technically yes. But the truth is, you risk irreparably ruining the structure of your set.
In this article, we explain why, as an independent brand focused on quality, we advise against filing your press-on nails.
1. The difference between plastic and professional gel
The press-on nails you find in department stores are often just pieces of molded plastic. In those cases, filing them doesn't make much of a difference because the material is unique and cheap.
Lunae Nails, on the other hand, are made with a professional multi-layer gel structure. This means that each tip has a base coat, multiple layers of color (or effects like cat eyes), and a final seal of top coat.
2. What does filing press-on gel nails involve?
Filing the edge or sides of a high-quality press-on means "breaking the seal." Here are the main risks:
- Delamination: Once the sealed edge is removed, the gel layers may begin to separate. The shiny top layer may crack or lift, precisely because the bond created during the cure has been lost.
- Loss of shine: By filing the tip, you expose the "heart" of the gel to air and moisture, making the edge more fragile and prone to chipping.
- Cat Eye Effect Ruin: In magnetic sets, the particles are suspended in the gel. Breaking the structure can alter the refraction of light at the edge.
3. The solution? Take the measurements correctly
The secret to a flawless manicure isn't knowing how to file, but choosing the right size before purchasing . If the size is right, the nail will fit perfectly around your cuticle without needing any touch-ups.

4. What if I really need to do a little touch-up?
If for some reason you really need to file them, follow these rules to limit the damage:
- Use a very fine grit file (buffer).
- File in one direction , never back and forth frantically.
- After touching up, apply a thin layer of clear top coat to the filed edge to try to "reseal" the gel fibers.
Bottom line: press-on nails are designed to be a ready-to-wear piece of jewelry. Treat them with care and choose the right size. Your hands will thank you with a manicure that lasts for weeks and stays as beautiful as the first day.

Q: Is the file included in the kit for filing press-on nails? A: The file included in the Lunae Nails kit is primarily designed for preparing your natural nail (slightly dulling it to help the glue adhere better) or for small, precise touch-ups, not for changing the shape of the gel set.
Q: What happens if I file down the tip of a Cat Eye set? A: You risk removing the sealant layer that protects the magnetic particles, making the edge dull and less impact resistant.
